Now celebrating our 30th anniversary, Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP) is trusted as an independent organization dedicated to improving healthcare quality in Massachusetts through data-driven insights and collaboration. MHQP is committed to transparency and centering the patient experience in all our work.
Why Your Support for MHQP Matters
MHQP has been driving statewide quality initiatives in Massachusetts since 1998, when we launched the first in the nation survey of patient experiences with acute care hospitals. In 2006, MHQP introduced the first in the nation survey of patient experiences with primary care. This work has paved the way for value-based care to take hold in Massachusetts.
MHQP’s Innovation Fund allows us to respond swiftly to the most pressing needs in our rapidly changing healthcare environment. With past support, MHQP’s Innovation Fund has seeded some of our most critical emerging initiatives – efforts that have gone on to advance understanding, promote equity, and improve care for patients across Massachusetts. These initiatives include:
- Launched the nation’s first Primary Care Dashboard to monitor the health of primary care in Massachusetts in collaboration with CHIA.
- Led groundbreaking work on inequities in pain care and the healthcare experiences of Black patients living with sickle cell disease and endometriosis.
- Developed “Together for Better Telehealth” surveys during COVID to support clinicians conducting virtual visits for the first time.
- Produced statewide patient experience survey reports, providing important equity insights into care experiences.
- Engaged our board and councils to explore emerging critical issues in patient experience, including trust, behavioral health care access, and the role and quality of urgent care services in a constrained primary care environment.
For three decades, MHQP has met the moment. Year after year, MHQP brings together clinicians, health plans, and patients to confront their toughest challenges, foster shared learning, elevate bold solutions, and build goodwill across sectors for the benefit of all patients. With your trust and support, we will continue to make a positive impact – together.
As MHQP enters its fourth decade and prepares for Barbra Rabson’s transition after nearly 28 years of leading the organization, your contributions to the Innovation Fund will honor her leadership and the values she championed.

Together, we will work to sustain Massachusetts as a national model for quality, equity, and patient-centered care.
At our spring 2026 celebration, MHQP will honor Dr. Atul Gawande with the MHQP Leadership Award in recognition of his commitment to rigorous measurement, transparency, equity and clarity of purpose to improve health at scale and in the lives of so many individuals.
