Quality Insights:
Clinical Quality in Primary Care
Healthcare quality measure: This measure looks at patients, age 18-56, who had asthma. It shows the percent of those patients who filled prescriptions for medication that controls this disease when taken over the long-term (months or years).
Reasons for this measure: Over 30 million Americans will suffer from asthma within their lifetime. About 14.5 million days of work are lost each year because of asthma. Nearly 5,000 people die from asthma each year. Good control of asthma can reduce the number of outpatient and emergency room visits and hospital admissions. It can also shorten the amount of time a patient spends in the hospital.
