The Greater Boston Quality Coalition

Who We Are

The Greater Boston Quality Coalition (GBQC) is multi-stakeholder collaborative led by Massachusetts Health Quality Partners (MHQP), the Eastern Massachusetts Healthcare Initiative (EMHI), and the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) and is supported by more than 35 Boston-area organizations. MHQP is a non-profit, broad-based coalition that has been collecting and reporting on health care quality information for providers and the public since 1995. EMHI is a collaborative of hospitals, health plans and universities with the shared vision for creating a high performance health care system for the region. BPHC is the public health agency for the City of Boston.

Mission

The Greater Boston Quality Coalition’s mission is to create substantive change and sustained improvement in the area’s health care system through community-wide performance measurement and reporting, consumer engagement, and quality improvement efforts. The Coalition’s initial focus is on reducing preventable emergency department visits and associated admissions as an indicator for assuring appropriate care in the community. GBQC will work to achieve and sustain community-wide improvements in caring for patients with chronic health conditions such as asthma and diabetes, as well as focusing on improving access to primary care services.

Aligning Forces for Quality

The Greater Boston Quality Coalition has been selected by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to participate as part of its Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q) initiative. AF4Q, a long-term, comprehensive effort to improve the quality of care in communities, is the signature program in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s $300 million commitment to improve the quality of U.S. healthcare. The program recognizes that though healthcare quality is a national problem, healthcare is delivered locally and fixing it requires local action. To date, RWJF has invested in 17 regions across the nation, including Albuquerque, Central Indiana, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Greater Boston, Humboldt County (CA), Kansas City (MO), Maine, Memphis, Minnesota, Puget Sound (WA), South Central Pennsylvania, West Michigan, Western New York, Willamette Valley (OR) and Wisconsin.

Next Steps

Greater Boston healthcare stakeholders came together and applied to become a full-fledged AF4Q community in November of 2009. GBQC’s proposal was accepted by the Foundation official in April 2010. We will continue to update this page and develop routine communications as GBQC’s AF4Q initiatives begin to move forward.
